Background & Journey

How a passion for helping others became a career dedicated to outdoor inclusion

Siobhan discovered her passion for senior outdoor recreation whilst volunteering with a local community group in County Down over a decade ago. She was helping older adults regain confidence in nature-based activities following health setbacks. That experience changed everything. What started as weekend volunteer work became a clear calling.

After completing her degree in Sports Science and Leisure Management at Queen's University Belfast, she spent five years as a leisure coordinator. But her real focus was always outdoors. She spent those years designing programmes, learning the land, and understanding what works — and what doesn't — for older adults wanting to get back into hiking. Her turning point came when she witnessed firsthand how gentle, properly-scaffolded hiking transformed both the physical health and mental wellbeing of participants aged 60 and above.

Her Approach

The philosophy behind everything Siobhan creates

Siobhan doesn't believe in one-size-fits-all outdoor programmes. She's seen too much variation in what works for different people. Some older adults need more time on technique. Others are anxious about steep sections. Some just want a gentle walk with friends. That's why every resource she creates is rooted in real conversations with the people who'll actually use it.

Her core belief is simple: age isn't a limitation. It's just a different set of considerations. The right trail, the right pace, the right support — these things matter far more than how many birthdays you've had. She's witnessed people in their 70s and 80s rediscover confidence and joy in the outdoors. Those moments drive her work.

Every guide she writes, every trail assessment, every safety protocol comes from this place. It's not about making hiking easier — it's about making it accessible, honest, and genuinely enjoyable. No pretending difficult sections don't exist. No sugar-coating the weather. Just clear, practical information that respects the reader's intelligence and experience.

"Age shouldn't be a barrier to outdoor enjoyment. The right preparation, the right trail, and the right mindset? That's all you need."
